The great outdoors
When not playing flute or being a labrat, I spend my time outdoors, preferably running or biking. I love mountains and trails, and more on my active adventures can be read on my training blog here. I started running marathons to qualify for the Boston marathon when I found out I was moving to Boston for my postdoctoral research. The Rotterdam Marathon was my debut and I achieved the Boston Qualifying (BQ) goal with 3.16.37. My first Boston marathon in 2013 was a success for me, with a PR of 3.09.07, but had (literally) an explosive ending. World news and a week of anxiety and total chaos in Boston followed. Boston Strong became the new reality, and the Boston Marathon will forever have a special part in my heart. Coming to like the marathon distance I added Chicago, New York and Philadelphia to my USA marathon list. Toronto is next. RunningWinning the 10k "chemistry run" 2011.

TriathlonBeing Dutch, biking is in my blood and picking up triathlon was too tempting to resist after moving to Boston. With positive result, after my first racing season I qualified to race in the US National Championships Olympic Distance for age-groupers, with a chance to qualify to race for team USA. Though I did not make the team (probably also wouldn't have been allowed on it anyways) it was a great experience to race amongst top athletes.
Swimming: Charles river 1 mile
I have been running around the Charles River for miles and miles, it was time to jump in. Not as dirty as you might think, great race!
